- The school is located in the north-western suburbs of Maryborough. It is a Band 8 Special School and is serviced by the Education Queensland’s Wide Bay –Burnett Region.
- The origins of the school date to 1960 when two opportunity classes existed at Maryborough Central State School. It became a separate school in January 1969. In 1972 the school opened on the grounds at Woodstock Street as the Maryborough Opportunity School.
- In 1978 it was renamed Maryborough Special School with an enrolment of 102 students.
- The school once was the centre for district office support staff as well as advisory visiting teachers and therapists. This was then utilized as the School Support Centre for the district.
- Over the years the cohort of students eligible to attend the Special School changed with amendments to the Ascertainment Process and now the Education Adjustment Process.
- The clientele has become more defined as students with intellectual impairment and multiple impairments only are eligible to attend the school.
- At the close of 2005 the student enrolment was registered at 41 students. Enrolments come from areas including: Maryborough, Biggenden, Howard, Bauple and Hervey Bay. Most students access transport assistance (a subsidy scheme in conjunction with Queensland Transport) and travel to and from school via minibus, taxi or private vehicle.
